Were You Told You Couldn't Sing?
But here’s something I always ask: Was the person who told you that actually qualified to diagnose you with amusia? (That’s the medical term for tone deafness, by the way.) The truth is, very few people are truly tone deaf. What’s much more common is someone who just hasn’t had the chance to sing in a safe, encouraging space.
I’ve spent years working with singers of all abilities, and I can tell you - singing is a skill that can be learned, just like anything else. It grows with support, practice, and joy. You don’t have to sound like Beyoncé to enjoy singing. You just need to be open to giving it a go.
Every week at UK Soul Choirs, I see people walk into rehearsals unsure, nervous - even convinced they can’t sing. And every week, I see those same people walk out smiling, shoulders relaxed, voices lifted. With a bit of encouragement, some uplifting soul music (Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Lizzo, you name it), and a friendly community around them, something shifts. Confidence grows. Fear fades. People rediscover their voice.
There are no auditions in my choirs. No judgment. Just a group of people who love singing great music together. Some are complete beginners. Some have sung for years. Everyone is welcome.
And this isn’t just about music - it’s about wellbeing. Singing in a group has been shown to reduce stress, lift your mood, and boost mental health. It brings people together, builds confidence, and gives you a weekly moment of real joy. I’ve seen it transform people.
So if you were told you couldn’t sing, I want you to know: that person was probably wrong. And even if you’re unsure, I invite you to prove them wrong.
